ABI students have come from over thirty different high schools, both public and private, in both the United States and abroad. Each summer's class is balance of young men and women in grades nine through twelve, each selected based on motivation, ability, and character. Many ABI graduates have gone on to major in science in college, and some are pursuing research positions and medical careers. A recent graduate was chosen for the highly competitive NIH Summer Research Internship Program. Other graduates have completed internships following ABI at Harvard Medical School, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Tufts New England Medical Center, Brigham & Women's Hospital, and Boston University.
What the students say:
  1. "Thank you so much! ABI was an amazing experience! I learned so much, not only about biotech lab techniques, but also what it would be like to make science my career. I am so glad I did this program!"
  2. "The best part about ABI was learning new science concepts in an environment where everyone else genuinely wanted to be there. I really enjoyed the other students in the program because we shared so many interests. We all became great friends."
  3. "It was great learning about different careers that are available in science. Our field trips to various biotech companies were really helpful to me. I now have a better sense of what options there are for careers in the field of science."
  4. "Dr. Brady's lecture on Gaucher Disease was the most intellectually stimulating part of the ABI program at NIH. We got to hear about research on the cutting edge of science and see how patients can benefit from these advances."
  5. "The best thing about this program is that it stimulated my interest in biotechnology and gave me confidence about working in the lab. Before attending ABI, I was daunted by the thought of working hands-on in a lab because I thought I would be awkward. At ABI I found to my amazement that things like micropipetting were not too difficult for me, and the concepts in the lab protocols made sense because of the way we were taught. New information presented was fascinating to me, and the program just flew by. I have come away from this experience with enthusiasm for science and a desire to learn more."
  6. "The lab visits and the lectures from scientists were the best parts. The NIH trip was awesome because we got to hear about research on the cutting edge of science and see how patients can benefit from these advances."
  7. "The best thing about ABI was the people!! I also loved being in the lab. There were a lot of hands-on activities."
  8. "I found it interesting to learn about the differences between the drug discovery process at pharmaceutical companies and the process at biotech companies."
