Typical weekly schedule at ABI
During the 3-week program, ABI students will complete ten or more advanced lab investigations, answering central questions as noted on the "ABI Curriculum" page. The days are generally structured as follows:
Morning: 9-12 In lab at the bench working in pairs:
* lab introduction and central question for the day
*learning and practicing specific biotech lab techniques
*performing lab protocol and obtaining lab results to answer the central question
Lunch: 12-12:30 Lunch in the RL dining hall alternates with pizza/sub days; salad bar choices
Afternoon: 12:30-3:30 Lab work continued or field trip to research/medical lab site
*Many labs will continue into the afternoon for conclusion and presentation of actual results by ABI students to their peers in class. Students also prepare a poster presentation.
*On other days, we travel by school van to visit research/medical/pharma sites in Cambridge and Boston. (See "ABI Consultants" page for examples.) Return times from field trips may sometimes be later than 3:30 PM. We will communicate by phone with parents for pick-up at Roxbury Latin as needed.
Note: We take an overnight trip in the final week of ABI to the labs at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod. Here, students complete lab work, visit with leading researchers on topics such as global warming and marine ecosystems, and have social time with friends at a top-rated oceanside hotel in West Falmouth, Massachusetts. Scientists have fun, too!
