We want to increase the number of students who choose to study science in college and go on to high-level science careers in research and medicine. ABI achieves this by exposing talented high school science students to advanced lab techniques and concepts in modern molecular biology and biotechnology. Students visit research facilities to meet with medical/biotech scientists who serve as role models and mentors for science careers. Students also participate in a research experience at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod. Here, students perform genetic analysis (FISH) of marine organisms collected during an offshore excursion on a WHOI research vessel. The ABI class each summer is limited to 20 students.
